“During the First Bulgarian Empire, Krum the Fearsome was khan of Bulgaria. He was known as a strict but just ruler, and during his reign wine growing was prohibited.
 
The king used lions to guard the capital during the night.  One night, a lion escaped the from its cage and terrorized the city. However, a fearless young man named Mavrud (now the name of a wine grape) confronted and slew the lion. The king summoned Mavrud's mother (her name was ILAYA) to learn the source of such courage and bravery.

Ilaya said she had secretly saved a vine, made wine, and that this was the source of Mavrud's bravery. Khan Krum ordered the vineyards replanted. He called the grapes after the lad`s name – Mavrud.”
