If making good wine is a balancing act, then the Freemark Abbey Winery Merlot 2013 has its act together. This excellently balanced red wine shows a perfect blend of fruit, body, tannin, and acidity. On the nose, look for milk chocolate and an integrated spicy oak. A touch of arugula and rich dark fruit add complexity and a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. The wine is very smooth from beginning to end and enjoys a nice, long finish. Enjoy this rich-yet-mellow red wine on its own or with a variety of red meat or roasted vegetable dishes.
